One Day Poetry Workshop

Oxford Creative Writing is delighted to be hosting Kate Clanchy on 8th August 2026 as the first of our Associate Writing Teachers.

Spend a full day writing poems with award-winning poet Kate Clanchy in the company of a select group of fellow writers.

The day includes a generative workshop in the morning, followed by individual tutorials in the early afternoon. After tea, we will be reading and sharing our work as a group. The course combines creative energy and personal attention and provides generous space for conversation, constructive feedback, and creative celebration. 

The day will run from from 10.30am to 6.30pm at Caper Books in Oxford, with an optional dinner in the evening at a local restaurant. There are many excellent local cafes available nearby for lunch.

Places on the course are limited to 8 max., so book soon to avoid disappointment.

About Kate

Kate Clanchy is a writer in several genres. She has won a Forward Prize, a Somerset Maugham Award, a Cholmondeley Award and the Saltire Prize for poetry; the BBC National Short Story Award and the V. S. Pritchett Award for fiction; the Writers’ Guild Award and the Orwell Prize for non-fiction; and two New York Festival awards for audio drama. She has also been shortlisted for the Foreign Press Awards for her journalism and is a regular reviewer for a range of newspapers.

Kate also loves to teach and has many years of experience working with writers at different stages of their creative lives. Alongside her work in schools, she has taught creative writing for the Arvon Foundation, First Story and the Forward Arts Foundation, as well as at Oxford Brookes University and the University of Reading. She is currently Director of Sanctuary Arts at Mansfield College, where she serves as Writer in Residence. 

Although she has developed a thriving online teaching practice, Kate continues to believe in the particular magic of the live poetry workshop. She is developing a series of these  with Oxford Creative Writing and Caper Books.
